Queensland - Smithsonian Fellowship

How the program works

Each year up to three Queenslanders are given the opportunity to undertake a project at the Smithsonian Institution based in the United States of America.

Applications are open to Queenslanders working in any area of mutual interest with the Smithsonian Institution including:

  • evolutionary, systemic, behavioural and environmental biology;
  • biodiversity, conservation and climate change;
  • earth, mineral and planetary sciences;
  • astrophysics;
  • anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, and Indigenous and cross-cultural studies;
  • material and folk culture;
  • science and technology;
  • art, design, crafts and the decorative arts;
  • materials conservation; and
  • museum practice, education and outreach.

The duration of a Fellowship is for a maximum of 26 weeks and a minimum of 13 weeks.

The maximum award for each Fellowship is A$30,000. The actual amount awarded for a particular Fellowship will depend on the duration of the Fellowship. It is intended that the Fellowship amount will cover:

  • a return economy airfare for the Fellow; and
  • a contribution towards the Fellow's cost of living while undertaking the Fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution.

All successful Fellows will be required to:

  • Enter into a formal agreement with the Queensland Government;
  • Take up the Fellowship within twelve months of announcement;
  • Provide a written report on the results of the Fellowship project and make presentations to interested parties after completion of the project; and
  • Make every reasonable effort to be present at the Fellowship announcement function.

The Fellowship cannot be taken in conjunction with other support for the costs of travel to the Smithsonian Institution to undertake the Fellowship Project (including living expenses during the period of the Fellowship).
