On 27 May 2003, Premier Peter Beattie announced the three successful Queenslanders in the 2003 program of the Queensland - Smithsonian Fellowships: Professor John McGrath, Dr Joseph Holtum and Troy Myers.
Professor John McGrath, from the Park Centre for Mental Health, examined a possible link between Vitamin D deficiencies in pregnant women and the development of schizophrenia in their teenage children.
Troy Myers, the Curator of the Richmond Marine Fossil Museum, compared fossils of ancient marine reptiles from western Queensland with those found in the south-western United States.
Dr Joseph Holtum, from James Cook University in Townsville, studied the impact of global climate change in the tropics and the future survival of Pacific Island communities.
The Fellows were hosted by the Smithsonian Institution's Human Origins Program, the Department of Paleobiology in the National Museum of Natural History, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama.
