Premier Peter Beattie announced the 2004 Queensland - Smithsonian Fellows on 11 May 2004. They are: Jon Day, Bill Hauritz and Professor Roger Kitching.
Jon Day, Director (Conservation, Biodiversity & World Heritage) at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority in Townsville, drew on his work with GBRMPA, and in particular the lessons learnt from the recent rezoning of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park to work with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute to assist marine managers to protect and manage marine biodiversity.
Bill Hauritz, the Festival Director of the Woodford Folk Festival, used his Fellowship to undertake research at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage as well as undertaking case studies of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and other USA folk and community festivals.
Professor Roger Kitching, Chair of Ecology at Griffith University, participated in a major international collaborative project with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama to survey insect biodiversity.
