Queensland Greats Awards
The Queensland Greats Awards recognise individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to the history and development of Queensland.
About the awards
Since the awards began in 2001, 40 Queenslanders and three Queensland organisations have been named as Queensland Greats. Each winner has been honoured with a commemorative plaque showcased at Roma Street Parkland.
2009 award recipients
Premier Anna Bligh announced the 2009 Queensland Greats as part of Queensland Week celebrations. The awards acknowledged five extraordinary Queenslanders and an iconic organisation for their significant role in the history and development of the state.

Mr Philip Bacon AM
Philip Bacon is a well-regarded art dealer, patron and philanthropist. In 1974 he established Philip Bacon Galleries. The gallery has since become Brisbane's leading commercial gallery, and has attracted clients and artists from around Australia. Philip is undoubtedly one of Australia's most successful commercial gallery dealers, and has dedicated his service to Queensland through his various roles on the boards of cultural authorities, universities and foundations.
Mr Bill Bristow AM
Humanitarian Bill Bristow founded the charity Angel Flight Australia. By providing free non-emergency flights, Angel Flight helps thousands of rural Australians with medical conditions who are also financially disadvantaged. As well as his role as a Partner of BCM Partnership, Bill has devoted a great deal of time and energy to establishing and maintaining Angel Flight. Bill's demonstrated passion and persistence continue to make an impact on the lives of many Australians.
Mr Kevin Carmody
Nationally and internationally renowned singer and songwriter Kevin Carmody has worked tirelessly as an Aboriginal advocate, promoting awareness of Indigenous issues through his music and academic achievements. Kevin has released seven critically acclaimed albums, and has had an album of his songs recorded by some of Australia's most prominent recording artists. Kevin continues to inspire people with his songwriting and storytelling and his years of service as an educator, writer and producer.
Dr Robyn Rodwell
Acclaimed medical scientist Dr Robyn Rodwell has worked tirelessly in support of the Queensland Cord Blood Bank project at the Mater Hospital. She has worked in both a professional capacity through research and development, and in a personal role through creating awareness of the project and facilitating extensive community fundraising and support. Her unwavering determination continues to benefit patients in Queensland and around the world.
Mr Anthony Ryan
Anthony Ryan has contributed significantly to the Brisbane community by establishing the Eddies Street Van (alongside Brother Damien Price). He has also established the Paddies Van to assist Brisbane’s homeless, street kids and the elderly. Commencing with two days a week, the programs have grown to provide daily assistance to the community. In recent years, Anthony has developed the Mimiki Foundation in South Africa to assist underprivileged children. Anthony has networked and devoted his talent and time to empowering others to reach out to those in need.
Blue Care
Blue Care, a missional arm of the Uniting Church in Queensland, has grown from one Blue Nurse in Brisbane 56 years ago, to one of Queensland's largest employers with 10,000 staff and 2000 volunteers across Queensland. Blue Care make over 2.5 million visits every year to the aged, people with a disability and those needing help after discharge from hospital. Blue Care also has a range of in-home and centre based respite, nursing homes, palliative care and carer support programs. By helping people remain independent, Blue Care plays an integral role in maintaining the social fabric of Queensland, keeping families and communities together.
