'The Awards, and the celebration around them, make the literary and intellectual collectivity visible to the nation, and to itself. Long may they thrive' Inga Clendinnen, winner of the 2004 History Book Award for Dancing with Strangers.

The Queensland Premier's Literary Awards were inaugurated in 1999 and have grown to become a leading literary awards program within Australia, with $225 000 in prizemoney over 14 categories.

The Awards offer all Australian established and aspiring authors the opportunity to gain recognition in the literary community as well as providing financial assistance to support the development of high quality writing.

The following categories were open for nomination in 2006:

Fiction Book Award $25 000     

Emerging Queensland Author - Manuscript Award

Unpublished Indigenous Writer -The David Unaipon Award $15 000
Non-Fiction -The Dymocks Literacy Foundation Award $15 000
History Book Award $15 000
Children's Book Award $15 000
Young Adult Book Award $15 000
Science Writer -Department of State Development, Trade and Innovation Award $15 000
Poetry Collection -Arts Queensland Judith Wright Calanthe Award $15 000

Australian Short Story Collection - Arts Queensland Steele Rudd Award

Literary or Media Work Advancing Public Debate -The Harry Williams Award $15 000
Film Script -Pacific Film & Television Commission Award $15 000
Television Script -QUT Creative Industries Award $15 000
Drama Script (Stage) Award $15 000


The shortlist will be announced in August 2006 and the winners of this year's Queensland Premier's Literary Awards will be announced in September 2006.
