The Criminal Justice Research unit is located within Policy Division in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet. Our main role is to:
- provide relevant and timely information to assist Government in responding to current and emerging issues within the criminal justice system; and
- build effective relationships across the criminal justice system through which a rigorous evidence base is established for informing policy and practice initiatives in the Queensland Criminal Justice System.
The unit has successfully coordinated the adoption of a process for the standardised collection of Indigenous information across the major criminal justice agencies through which data about Indigenous contact with police, courts and correctional agencies is now available in Queensland from the 2004 calendar year.
The unit has also coordinated publication of the annual Criminal Justice System Bulletin which brings together key policy, legislative and trend information about the various aspects of responding to crime in the Queensland context.
Criminal Justice Research works closely with representatives of the Queensland Police Service, the Department of Justice and the Attorney-General, the Department of Corrective Services, the Department of Communities, the Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy and the Office of Economic and Statistical Research to ensure the Queensland Government is provided with an evidence base through which policy development can be informed. Other agencies, such as the Crime and Misconduct Commission, the Department of Tourism, Fair Trading and Wine Industry Development collaborate with Criminal Justice Research on relevant projects.
