Law and Justice Policy is located within Policy Division in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet. We play a central role in addressing Queensland's key law and justice issues including:
- Corrective services and prisons
- Fair trading
- Police
- The Courts
- Law reform
- Freedom of information
- Security and terrorism prevention
- Crime and sentencing
- Drug courts
We provide strategic advice and policy analysis to the Premier and Cabinet on these issues; coordinate the development and implementation of whole of government policies, legislation and programs on law and justice issues for Queensland; and support the other work units of Policy Division by providing advice on the legal and justice implications of other policy issues. Our legislative responsibilities also include managing and reviewing all legislation administered by the Premier.
We also manage another unit relating to the criminal justice system:
- the Criminal Justice Research Unit which provides specialised research to assist the Queensland Government in developing coordinated, evidence-based policies on criminal justice issues.
Examples of the types of activities we have been involved in include:
- coordinating the government's illicit drug diversion initiatives by chairing the Queensland Illicit Drug Diversion Initiative Reference Group;
- developing a proposal for court-based diversion of illicit drug offenders and coordinating the drug court pilot project across government;
- leading Queensland's participation in initiatives to counter trans-national crime and terrorism; and
- coordinating the development of a response to the Project Axis Report on Child Sexual Abuse.
