People profile - Andrew Moritz

Playing trains is serious business

Andrew Moritz was appointed Director of The Workshops Rail Museum in Ipswich in December 2001, 10 months before the Museum opened. He is in charge of a huge collection of trains and railway memorabilia - a lot different from the Hornby model train set he owned as a boy. Andrew chats with Sectorwide about his life and career.

I was born in ... Melbourne.

My first job was ... an Engineering Cadet for Melbourne Water.

My greatest influences were ... my parents and history teachers at school, who instilled in me an interest and passion for history and heritage.

My best day at the Museum was ... when we won the Australian Tourism Award for Heritage and Cultural Tourism. I had the wonderful task of accepting the award on behalf our marvellous team.

My biggest challenge at the Museum is ... recognising we cannot do everything. We'd like to do it all at once and having to choose and prioritise projects is always a challenge. There are so many great ideas out here!

If I could swap careers, I would like to be a ... pilot as I enjoy flying and exploring new places.

My favourite holiday destination is ... Alexandra Headland.

My favourite book is ... Seven Wonders of the Industrial World by Deborah Cadbury.

At the moment I am reading ... Rocket Men: The Epic Story of the First Man on the Moon by Craig Nelson.

My favourite television show is ... Spooks.

My favourite movie is ... the Star Wars series (I grew up with it!).

If a movie was made about me, the actor I would cast as Andrew Moritz is ... Tom Hanks.

My motto is ... Learn all you can because who knows how far it will take you.

People say I'm ... passionate and committed to my job.
