9.2 Questions on Notice

On each sitting day Members may ask one Question on Notice to a Minister (not the Speaker). The question must be lodged with the Clerk at the Table by 11.30 am every sitting day. Ministers are required to answer each Question on Notice within 30 calendar days of the question being asked.

No question may be put to the Speaker. In lieu of a question to a Minister, a Member may put a question on notice to any other Member relating to a Bill or other motion that the Member has charge or to the chair of a committee (about the activities of the committee) on the Notice Paper.

The text of Questions on Notice asked each sitting day is produced in the Questions on Notice section of the next day's Notice Paper. The Notice Paper is delivered by Government Printer courier to the Minister's parliamentary and departmental office the morning after each sitting day. The Notice Paper is also delivered to various departmental officers and published on the Parliament House Internet site.

Ministers are to use the Notice Paper as confirmation that a question on notice has been directed to them.
