Information Privacy Principles (IPPs)

The IPPs contained in IS42 are based on the privacy principles provided for in the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988. The IPPs govern how personal information is collected, stored, used and disclosed by Government agencies.

IPPs 1,2 and 3 deal with what personal information may be collected, the way it is collected and what notices must be given to the individual from whom the information is collected.

IPPs 4 and 5 deal with requirements for ensuring that personal information is stored securely and protected from loss, unauthorized access, use, modification, disclosure or misuse and about maintaining a privacy plan.

IPPs 6 and 7 deal with individuals obtaining access to and amending personal information held by agencies.

IPPs 8,9, 10 and 11 deal with accuracy of personal information before use; how personal information is used and disclosed by agencies; and provides exceptions for the use and disclosure of personal information.
