Enthusiastic renewal for Yatala
David Shadbolt
The Department of Communities' Gold Coast North Community Renewal team is seeing first hand what can be achieved by linking government, business and the community to solve local employment issues.
With Beenleigh's high unemployment rates and the neighbouring Yatala industrial estate experiencing a shortage of workers the Community Renewal team saw the opportunity to bridge the gap, meet both needs and benefit the community as a whole.
Senior Resource Officer Kevin Burton and the Gold Coast team implemented the Yatala Enterprise Area Skills and Labour Supply Chain project, rallying the support of other government agencies and local businesses.
The Yatala Chamber of Commerce provided representatives for a steering committee, who then worked together to pitch the concept to around 80 other local businesses.
Kevin said through collaboration with 324 local businesses and 214 providers of Australian Government employment services, the project had more than exceeded expectations.
'Over 730 local people have gained employment since the project began in January 2007 and unemployment in the area has dropped to its lowest rate in years,' Kevin said.
'It is what the overall Community Renewal program is all about - creating local partnerships and striving towards a united goal to make a real difference within the community.' David Shadbolt (pictured) is proof of the success of the YEA Project.
'If it wasn't for this project, I would never have known of the job opportunities available in the Yatala estate,' David said.
CAROLE has training sorted
Some of the CAROLE contact officers (left to right) Janet Lucas, DPC; Renee Pera, DPC; Tracee McPate, ANZSOG; and Karen Radford, Treasury; with CAROLE administrator Emma Aubrey, Public Service Commission.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) has launched CAROLE - the Central Agency Register of Learning Events.
CAROLE makes it easy to find out what training is being offered by central agencies. Any agency running an event that is open to public servants can add an event to CAROLE.
The calendar tells who the event is aimed at, where it is located, if there is a cost and where to find further information.
The PSC is responsible for CAROLE, which is updated monthly.
