People profile - Barbara Leys
Disability Services Cape and Torres Local Area Coordination Supervisor Barbara Leys was named the Cook Shire Citizen of the Year on Australia Day this year.
A long term resident of Cooktown, Barb, as she prefers to be known, is a volunteer for a range of committees and community groups including the local rural fire brigade and Health Action Group.
As well as founding the Cooktown District markets, she's also found time to:
- revitalise the Cooktown and District Community Centre
- introduce the 60s and Better Program to the region
- help establish the Multi Purpose Health Service in Cooktown
- develop the Community Options Program.
With Disability Services, Barb links people with a disability to support networks and services and advocates for the frail aged, people with disabilities and their carers.
Barb travels throughout the Cape and Torres Strait, spending many days away from home to cover the thousands of kilometres necessary to assist people in the most remote areas. But Barb sees the travel as a highlight of her work.
‘I really love our patch of the world,’ Barb said.
‘Being involved in community groups is a great way to stay connected to the community and to spend time with people you might not otherwise meet.’
