Explore Queensland's first 50 years online
The State Library of Queensland website is celebrating Q150 with a virtual exhibition of Queensland's first 50 years.
Becoming Queensland explores the state's beginnings from Proclamation in 1859 to the 1909 Jubilee celebrations.
The exhibition showcases the state's early history through stories about the people, places, institutions and lifestyles that have made it so special.
The online exhibition features stunning images and insights into Queensland's founding years, including:
- stories of Indigenous survival
- the origin of the Queensland border's iconic shape
- what shearers read during the 1890s strike
- historical pamphlets
- the famed Labor Party manifesto.
There are some fascinating maps, stories and images on the website and it is well worth a visit.
Becoming Queensland is a collaboration between the State Library's historian-in-residence and Griffith University Professor Anna Haebich, and staff in Heritage Collections.
