Former museum curator wins prestigious medal

Former Curator of the Queensland Museum of Lands, Mapping and Surveying William Kitson has been awarded the James Park Thomson Medal by the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland for his 25 years' work at the museum.

William joined the State Government as a cadet surveyor in 1966.

In 1982 he founded the Museum of Lands, Mapping and Surveying, which is part of the Department of Environment and Resource Management.

He was the Senior Curator of the museum from 1982 until he retired in 2007.

The annual award medal is the society's most prestigious award and recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the field of geography.

The award was established in 1900 to pay tribute to JP Thomson, the founder of the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland.

William also delivered the annual JP Thomson Address at the ceremony.

Former medal recipients include aviator Bert Hinkler, chief architect of the Story Bridge and the Sydney Harbour Bridge Dr John Bradfield and explorer Douglas Mawson.
