Healthy history

Queensland Health is showcasing its nursing and medical history in a travelling display to mark Q150.

The Queensland Health Q150 Travelling Exhibition features photos and information about significant health milestones, profiles of leaders in health care and the evolution of health care facilities including the development of the mental health service in Queensland.

At some sites, local events will be staged to support the display including staff lunches, period costume competitions, exhibitions of historical items and school group visits.

A quote from the display reveals how an influenza epidemic was handled by the Queensland Government 90 years ago.

'In 1919 an influenza outbreak quickly spread to hospitals in Brisbane and isolation tents were erected in the Brisbane Exhibition grounds and St Laurence's Christian Brothers College to cope with the epidemic. Local health workers issued cards for house windows with "SOS" if a doctor was needed and "Food" if supplies were needed.'

The Queensland Health Q150 Travelling Exhibition has already visited Bundaberg, Wondai, Kingaroy, Kilcoy, Caboolture, Redcliffe, Royal Children's Hospital at Herston, Prince Charles Hospital at Chermside, Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Ipswich.

The tour will culminate at the Queensland Health Building in Charlotte Street, Brisbane on 21 December.

Other confirmed dates:

The travelling exhibition was developed in collaboration with the Australian Medical Association and the Queensland Nurses Union.
