Cancer screening in the workplace
The BreastScreen Queensland Program is running a 12-month cancer screening project for public servants.
Ten government agencies and non-government workplaces are taking part in the pilot project aimed at early detection of the disease.
In a recent health risk analysis, Department of Public Works (DPW) discovered that many of its employees did not regularly adhere to the cancer screening advice.
Staff will be offered education sessions and other health promotion initiatives, such as time off to attend screenings. Workplace health and safety contacts within DPW will work with Health Promotion Officers from both the BreastScreen Queensland and Queensland Bowel Cancer Screening Programs around the state.
Last year, the BreastScreen Queensland Brisbane Northside Service provided information to DPW's Women in Works Committee, with excellent results.
Chris Knight, Chair of the Women in Works Committee, said the program was very informative.
'It is a timely reminder for us all to encourage others as well as ourselves to have regular breast screens and check-ups,' Chris said.
The BreastScreen Queensland Workplace Project is collaborating around the state with Ramsay Hospitals, Spiritus, Red Cross and Cardno. This year, the project will endeavour to forge links with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Police Service and Coles Supermarkets.
Government departments interested in joining the project can email Elizabeth Ostermann.
