Mike builds carpentry skills in Fiji

Department of Education and Training's SkillsTech Australia carpentry teacher Mike Adamson, who usually teaches at the Bracken Ridge Training Centre, helped carpenters from seven Pacific Island nations complete gap training to become certified to Australian training standards.

Working with the Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC) in Fiji, Mike taught and workplace-trained the students, who built a classroom in Suva.

He said the work was challenging and he had to dig deep, but the rewards were well worth it.

'My wife, daughters and I now have many new friends and colleagues in the islands, both APTC staff and the locals we lived with. I would recommend the experience to anyone,' Mike said.

Mike was supported by SkillsTech Australia's Human Resources Business Unit to take part in the 12-month secondment.
