Meet the Heads of Main Roads

Doug, Keith and Phil Head have notched up a combined 127 years of service with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, but the era ended on 27 February 2009 when Keith officially retired from the department.

Doug, Keith and Phil all started with Main Roads in Barcaldine. Doug, Manager (Network Planning & Performance) Toowoomba, started on 28 November 1960. Keith, Design Applications Manager with Business Solutions and Information in Brisbane, started on 5 December 1966 and Phil, Principal Technical Officer/Manager Corridor Management and Operations at Emerald, started on 29 November 1971.

All three have design backgrounds and used their experience and expertise to forge careers in different areas.

Keith said working with Main Roads had been a good experience and a good journey.

'I've had one employer for 42 years but done a myriad of jobs,' Keith said.

Keith spent seven years at Barcaldine before moving to Brisbane. He worked in freeway, intersection and interchange design, and became proficient in applications so he could support and train others.

He has many things to do in retirement and 'doesn't know the meaning of the word boredom'. On the list are working on the house and in the yard, designing and building furniture and bee keeping.

In 2001, the three brothers received a Main Roads Australia Day Achievement Award for meritorious service, an honour Phil described as 'very humbling'.

Phil said it was sad the Head family era has come to an end.

'Given Generation Y won't stay with the same employer for any length of time, it's highly unlikely what we've done will ever be repeated,' Phil said.
