Ford's fascinating road story
The development of roads in Far North Queensland is the subject of a book by Department of Transport and Main Roads' Lyall Ford.
The Cairns Project Management Services Director wrote Roads in the Wilderness, a history of the design, location and construction of the Far North's roads from 1863 to 1963.
Lyall, who started working with Main Roads in 1961, took three years part time to write the book, taking his knowledge and experience from working in many districts throughout the state.
Roads in the Wilderness is not Lyall's first publication. He has also written family histories Poorhouse to Paradise and Below These Mountains, as well as A Photographic Record of Colonial Queensland and 101 Ways to Improve Your Health.
Roads in the Wilderness and other Main Roads publications are available from the Department of Transport and Main Roads (external site), phone (07) 3834 5488.
