Police officer wins international award

Detective Superintendent Brian Hay, head of Queensland Police Service's Fraud and Corporate Crime Group (FCCG), has won the prestigious McAfee's Cybercrime Fighter Award.

The FCCG specialises in the investigation of major fraud and computer-related crimes, including identity theft and fraud prevention.

Detective Superintendent Hay (pictured) has been a police officer for 28 years. He educates the public about internet crime and has investigated Nigerian fraud, which cost Australians millions of dollars.

Chief Vet wins horse flu award

Queensland's Chief Veterinarian Dr Ron Glanville has won the 2009 Equine Veterinarians Australia Award for services to the horse industry for his handling of the equine influenza (EI) outbreak.

EI was detected in Sydney in August 2007 and within hours Biosecurity Queensland (external site), with Dr Glanville in charge, ordered a statewide standstill of horses. Three weeks later, movement zones were introduced.

During the outbreak, there were over 3800 known infected properties and 70,000 horses were vaccinated.

There have been no reported cases of EI in Queensland since 25 December 2007. The state was officially declared EI free in January 2009.

Dr Glanville (pictured) said he was delighted with the award and dedicated it to all staff who worked throughout the response.

‘EI has been present in most countries but Australia is one of the only places to have carried out a successful eradication program,’ Dr Granville said.
